This is the latest and hottest Nintendo Switch Console. But how much is different and is it worth buying?

Nintendo Switch has been a success since its release in 2017. Nintendo has sold more than 111.08 million units up to now. The number comes from Nintendo’s own financial services as of June 30, 2022.

Differences from the previous version of Nintendo Switch

  • Display
  • Internal Memory
  • Design of the console
  • Dock

Display

The display is the main difference. The display is a bit bigger in size, now 7 inches, but with smaller bezels so the console keeps the same size as the original switch. The OLED display is more power efficient and gives you a clearer and brighter picture. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and is a newer technology than LCD which was used in the original Switch.

How do OLED display works?

Internal Memory

The internal memory is 64 GB instead of 32 GB which gives you a bit more room to store games. I would still suggest that you buy a microSD card for storage.

Design of the console

The OLED Switch has a new and better designed kickstand than the previous model. The kickstand can be set to a wide range of positions. The original kickstand would only allow for one position.

Dock

The dock is the same except for one thing. The newest dock has a LAN port inside for internet access using a network cable. The LAN port has replaced a USB port which does not exist anymore.

The dock is now available in two colors. It comes in white or black color. The previous dock came only in black.

The new dock is backwards compatible with the old switch. So if your old dock breaks you can buy the newer version of the dock separate.

Is it worth getting the OLED version or just go for original switch?

It is hard to tell. There are some key differences as the screen and the internal memory. The price isn’t that much more for the new one so I would prefer the newer version.

If you play a lot of games in handheld mode this might be interesting to buy. If you are like me and the Switch stays in the dock most of the time this upgrade won’t make much of a difference.

The original version was good from the start. And the new improvements aren’t mind-blowing or major in any way. So if you don’t want to pay the little extra for the newer one I’m sure you will be happy with the original Switch.
