In this post I will explain which SD cards you can use in your Nintendo Switch Console. Let’s start with answering which SD card you should buy for your Nintendo Switch and then discuss alternatives and what the specifications mean.

You should buy a Sandisk microSD card for your Nintendo Switch Console. To be totally clear you should buy a Sandisk microSDXC card 64 GB or larger.

Here’s a few examples that will work fine:

  1. Sandisk MicroSDXC Ultra 256 GB
  2. Sandisk MicroSDXC Extreme 128 GB
  3. Sandisk MicroSDXC Extreme Pro 1 TB
  4. Sandisk MicroSDXC Nintendo Switch 512 GB

Just remember that in order to use a microSDXC card on the Nintendo Switch you need to update the system.

What about the specifications?

Your Nintendo Switch supports microSD up to 2 GB size, microSDHC from 4 GB to 32 GB and microSDXC from 64 GB and up to 2 TB. I would recommend buying a 64 GB or larger microSDXC card as listed in the beginning of this post.

Nintendo recommends that you use a microSD card that supports UHS-1 and transfer speeds of 60-95 MB/sec.

UHS-1 stands for Ultra High Speed Phase 1. There are faster cards with UHS-2 and UHS-3 that you can use in your Switch but the faster speeds won’t make any difference.

Other brands that also manufactures microSD cards are:

  • Kingston
  • Lexar
  • Samsung
  • Transcend
